"The day the Ruscettis came to sign our marriage agreement, they brought an expired bottle of supplements instead of the medicine my mother needed to survive. Enzo's childhood friend raised her diamond-studded nails to her lips and smiled. “Don't be angry, Clara. All I said was that I wanted real red diamonds on my nails for my birthday. I never thought Enzo would actually trade the medicine for them.” Enzo was the head of the Ruscetti crime family, but all he cared about was making excuses for her. “It's Viola's birthday. She rarely wants anything this much. I've already sent my men to find another dose. We'll hear something soon. Your mother will be fine.” In my last life, I believed him. The day the Ruscettis came to sign our marriage agreement, they brought an expired bottle of supplements instead of the medicine my mother needed to survive. But my mother died before that medicine ever came. When I went to the Ruscetti estate and begged for help, a guard told me, “Miss Conti says your mother is just run-down. There's no reason to waste such valuable medicine on her.” Then they threw me out into the snow. This time, I looked at the expired supplements and smiled. “You haven't brought what you promised. The wedding is off.” *** Every guest in the living room turned to look as the medical case opened. They all knew my mother needed a dose of the R-9 antidote to survive. And in all of San Vito, the Ruscettis were the only ones known to have it. But the case contained nothing except a bottle of supplements with a blackened rim. Someone frowned. “Where's the antidote?” “Did the Ruscettis bring the wrong case?” “Aren't they signing the agreement today? The Harts are putting up twenty million dollars, and the Ruscettis can't even keep their end of the deal?” A rare toxic reaction to medication had left my mother gravely ill. Conventional treatment could only keep her alive for so long. According to her doctors, the antidote that could reverse the damage had been discontinued, and almost none of the remaining stock could be traced. My father had used every contact his pharmaceutical group had. Nothing. Then the Ruscettis approached us. Enzo had just succeeded his father as don. He controlled port operations and casinos—and owed enough money to bring down the family. He promised to deliver the medicine on the day we signed the marriage agreement so my mother could begin treatment immediately. In return, I would marry him, and the Harts would invest twenty million dollars in a joint venture with his family. It was enough to save his port interests and get his creditors off his back. Yet all he had brought was a bottle of expired supplements. Viola leaned against him, tiny diamonds set into her scarlet nails. “Don't look at me like that. I really only mentioned it in passing.” She lifted her hand beneath the light. The red diamonds flashed. “The broker said he'd only trade them for the medicine he needed. I didn't think Enzo would actually say yes.” Enzo glanced at her with indulgent affection. “Clara, Viola doesn't understand these things. It was my decision. Don't blame her. “It's her birthday. She wanted something to make her happy. I couldn't deny her that.” Then he turned to me as though we were discussing some minor inconvenience. “I'll find another dose. My men are already contacting the original seller. Just sign the agreement. “Once we're married, your mother will be my family too. Of course I'll save her.” That was what I had believed in my last life. That he would find another dose. That he wouldn't gamble with my mother's life. Afterward, the Ruscettis kept claiming they had new leads, getting my father to pay one supposed sourcing fee or shipping charge after another. My mother only grew worse. Then, on the night she lay dying, I heard that Enzo had finally obtained the medicine. I rushed to the Ruscetti estate through a blizzard, barely stopping to put on my coat. “He promised to save my mother. Let me in. I need to see him.” The guards stopped me at the gate. “The boss took Miss Conti to the house in the mountains. He's not here.” “Then call him! My mother doesn't have much time!” The guard laughed. “Miss Conti left instructions. Your mother's just run-down. That medicine could be useful someday. We can't waste it on her.” I clung to the iron gate and begged them to give it to me. “Whatever it costs, my father will pay. Please. Just save her.” Inside, men sipped their drinks and watched me as though I were there for their entertainment. “What have the Harts got besides money?” “She really thinks she's going to run this place? The boss said Miss Conti has the final say in this house.” “So we don't let her in. What, you think she'll get back at us later?” I waited in the snow until my fingers went numb. Until my assistant, Mia, found me in tears. “Clara, the hospital called. Your mother…” I never got to say goodbye. The cold of that memory sank into my bones. I dug my nails into my palms. I had been given a second chance so I could save her. Viola was still smiling. “The Harts may have money, but you're still just suppliers. Do you think your shipments would get through the port so easily without Ruscetti protection? “Enzo's willing to marry you. The least you can do is be understanding. The medicine will be a little late. Why embarrass him in front of everyone?” Her eyes slowly filled with tears. “Or are you blaming me?”

“Enzo, once she moves into the estate, will she make me leave?” Viola lowered her head and started picking at the diamonds on her nails. “I'll take them all off. This is my fault. I shouldn't have celebrated my birthday.” Enzo caught her hand at once. “Don't hurt yourself. They were a gift from me. Why should you take them off?” He wiped a tear from the corner of her eye, then looked at me. “Clara, you've always been reasonable. She's younger than you. You're not going to hold this against her, are you?” I shut the case. “Delivering the R-9 was a condition of the agreement. You haven't kept your promise, so I won't sign. “The wedding is off. Who you give your things to is no longer any concern of mine.” The smile froze on Enzo's face. “What did you say?” Mia stepped up beside me. “Miss Hart said the marriage is off. Nothing will be signed today, and no money will be transferred to your accounts.” Enzo's expression darkened. “You're calling off the marriage because I traded the medicine for Viola's birthday present? “Every family knows we were supposed to make our engagement official today. You back out now, and you humiliate the Ruscettis.” Viola clutched his sleeve, her tears falling faster. “She's angry with me. Don't blame her.” Then she turned to me. “But you need to think about what matters. Enzo runs a family. Why are you so determined to make him beg in front of everyone? “Your father's money doesn't buy you a place in our world. Do you know how many women would love to stand beside him? He chose you. What more do you want?” She paused, lowering her voice just enough that everyone could still hear. “And is your mother really that sick? I heard she's just weak. The Harts made sure everyone knew they were looking for this drug. Wasn't that just a way to attract a powerful husband?” The way Enzo looked at me changed. “So that's what this is? You're making a scene because you want more attention? “I told you I'd find another dose. You've got all these guests, all the fuss you wanted. What else do you need?” Someone finally spoke up. “Her mother's life depends on that medicine. It's not a missing necklace.” “The agreement is clear. The medicine comes first, then the signatures. He breaks the deal, and somehow she's the difficult one?” Another guest lowered their voice. “Aren't the Ruscettis' debts coming due? I don't think it's the fiancée he can't bear to lose. It's the twenty million.” Enzo's mother, Camilla, couldn't hide her embarrassment. She came over and took my hand. “Clara, you're a sensible girl. Enzo should have handled the medicine more carefully. I'll make sure he follows up. “But Viola grew up in our home. Her father died taking a bullet for my husband. Enzo looks after her like a sister. There's no need to be jealous. “A don's wife has to think of the bigger picture.” I withdrew my hand and stepped back. “Mrs. Ruscetti, my father was very clear before he left. The medicine goes to the doctor, the doctor confirms it's usable, and only then do we sign. “There's no medicine. There's no deal. “Everyone knows my mother needs that dose to survive. Enzo knows it too.” I looked at him. “And he still traded it for the diamonds on Viola's nails. “To him, my mother's life matters less than a manicure. Do you honestly think I should marry a man like that?” Camilla's smile faded. I held my ground. “You say I've humiliated your family. Did you think about mine when you walked into our house with an expired bottle of supplements?” They wanted our money to pay their debts while trampling over my mother and me to keep Viola happy. They really thought I would beg them on my knees again. I opened the case and set the bottle in front of Enzo. “Take it with you. We don't want it.”

Enzo stared at the case without reaching for it. I glanced at the bottle. “My family works in pharmaceuticals. I can read an expiration date. “This expired eight months ago, and the seal's broken. Give it to someone who's already ill, and you could send them straight to the ER.” A few guests couldn't quite stifle their laughter. “He brought that instead of lifesaving medicine. Unbelievable.” “The Harts haven't even transferred the money yet, and this is how he treats them.” Camilla's expression hardened. “Who packed this?” Viola stepped forward, tears instantly spilling down her cheeks. “I did. I just wanted to make it up to Clara. “I felt terrible after the medicine was traded for the diamonds. This morning, I found the supplements my mother left me. I thought they might help Mrs. Hart get her strength back.” She pressed a hand to her chest and choked back a sob. “They're one of the few things I have left from my mother. I could never bring myself to open the bottle. I didn't know it had gone bad. “You can think it's worthless, but why humiliate me in front of everyone? It means more to me than anything.” A few guests looked sympathetic. “She meant well.” “It belonged to her mother, after all. There's no need to be so harsh.” I could almost have laughed. It wasn't their mother lying in a hospital bed, waiting to die. Of course they could afford to be generous. I picked up the bottle and turned to our company's head of quality control. “Daniel, would you check when this was manufactured?” He took it and examined the label. “This company was founded three years ago. According to the lot number, this bottle was produced two years ago.” I looked at Viola. “Didn't your mother die ten years ago? “How did she leave you something that wouldn't be made for another eight years?” The people who had defended her fell silent. Someone laughed. “She even dragged her dead mother into the lie.” “Did she think no one would read the label?” Viola's face flushed. She jerked her head up. “He's on your payroll. Of course he'll say whatever you want! “I'm not lying. Having money doesn't give you the right to call me a liar just because I have no family to defend me!” “Dr. Hall is here too.” I glanced across the room. “He came to verify the medicine and arrange my mother's treatment. Should we ask him to take a look? “Or did I buy him off as well?” Dr. Hall had barely taken a step when Viola snatched the bottle away. “Enough!” She rushed to Enzo, turning her tearstained face up to his. “She just wants me gone. As long as I live at the estate, she'll never agree to marry you. “I'll leave. I'll move out today. I won't cause you any more trouble.” Enzo pulled her into his arms. His expression turned cold. “The Harts are businesspeople. Since when do you get to speak to me like this? “I'm offering to make you my wife. That alone should be an honor for your family. Don't push your luck, Clara.” I looked at his hand resting on Viola's waist and gave a faint smile. “You broke the agreement. Now you're trying to force me to sign it? “Or does Don Ruscetti really think he can trade an expired bottle of supplements for twenty million dollars?” A vein pulsed at his temple. He stepped closer and lowered his voice. “I already have a lead on another dose of R-9. “Call off the marriage, and my men stop looking. When your mother's running out of time, we'll see if you can still talk to me like that.” He thought he had me cornered. In my last life, I had signed. We had paid. And what had it bought us? My mother had died anyway. The promised medicine had been an excuse to keep squeezing money out of my family. Nothing more. I forced down the hatred rising in my chest and met his eyes. “My mother is no longer your concern. “And neither am I. This marriage is off.”
